Day 4

With some trepidation I approached the heads..

First I set the crank to 45deg after TDC. Just in case the cams moved while I was removing them.
Loading...
Loading...
I'm not sure what this is called..
Loading...
Loading...
I loosened the belt tentioner so I could take the cam gears off.
Loading...
Loading...
The cam gears actually came off very easily.
Loading...
Loading...
Underneath the cam gear is a thin plate which I removed also.
Loading...
Underneath that is a triangular shaped thing. I'm starting to feel like an Archealogist!
Loading...
Loading...
Whew.
Loading...
Then I removed the cam seal retainers.
Loading...
I'm not really sure how effective they are since they're just plastic arms that seem to have some amount of flex..
Loading...

Porsche recommends using a special tool to hold down the cams as you unbolt them since they under a bit of spring tension from the tappets beneath them. Since I didn't have this tool and it costs over $200, I took Susan @ Devek's suggestion and loosened each bolt on the top of the head by 45degrees working in a spiral pattern similar to the one used to loosen the head bolts.

After I had gotten all the bolts almost loose, I tightened the left-most and right-most cam bearings about 1/4 way down and then removed all the others.
Loading...
Loading...
Here's the cams removed - cam chain is still in place.
Loading...
I next removed the cam chain oiler.
Loading...
Then the Cam chain tensioner.
Loading...
Finally the cam seals.
Loading...
In order to lock the cam from moving when I undid the cam bolt, I had to create a slightly odd contraption.. (I actually had to do this for the passenger side too but I didn't take picture)
Loading...
Loading...
Both sets of cams removed.
Loading...
I next removed the headbolts in the order specified in the manual.
Loading...
At last! You can see the piston heads.
Loading...
Same on the passenger side.
Loading...
More pistons! We're getting somewhere now..
Loading...
The incredible shrinking engine..
Loading...
Next I removed the oil strainer thing..
Loading...
Loading...
Here's all the parts semi-neatly organized and baggied.
Loading...
You can see the passenger's side head here.
Loading...
Closeup of the valves.
Loading...
Another..
Loading...
Closeup of the cylinder - I'm not sure if that's corrosion or just gasket junk.
